It was 8 in the evening.. and I was out in the market looking for some Areldite to fix a chipping slab in my kitchen.. Usually found at hardware stores, it was difficult for me to find it as most of Gurgaon market is shut on Tuesdays. I was also grumbling over having to steer my old Maruti Alto thru various turns as my shoulder was hurting from a probable excessive workout the previous evening. So basically an overall not-so-happy evening for me.. until my wife reminded, er, rather enquired about our plan for the evening.. as Imogen Jennifer Jane Heap was scheduled to perform at the Hard Rock Cafe, New Delhi!
That brought a smile on my face!! :) A short while later I told mom that we will be eating out..
We reached the venue bit late, fighting traffic on way.. and to my surprise.. the venue was packed like the audience is familiar with the artist who’s about to perform! Really, Imogen has not been so known in India.. However, this very amazing tv-show about a musical journey called The Dewarists, on Star World India.. has been successfully making some very good episodes that bring together 2 artists to collaborate and compose a song together. The first of this series was a collaboration between Imogen and Vishal-Shekhar (a popular music director duo in Bollywood while Vishal himself is the frontman of an electronica/rock band called Pentagram). The Dewarists has surely made a positive contribution as far as music concerned.
Coming to Imogen Heap… She’s one busy performer on stage! She can play a lot of instruments.. and how! You will see her using various items for the wide array of sounds she sets up her very unique performance with. I saw bells, pipes and some gesture-controlled music inputs that left me awe-struck. And with interactivity every now and then not just with her quick witted Brit humor, but also through crowd participation for chorus on couple of her songs, she had the people engaged!
What was also rather interesting to see was the collaboration with Ashwin, the Indian flautist who accompanied Imogen’s band for this gig. He was quite the revelation when the gig was nearing its end, as they performed the lovely song Imogen had collaborated with Vishal-Shekhar for on the Dewarists show! “Minds Without Fear” featured Ashwin on the vocals and he did justice as the replacement for Vishal Dadlani & Shekhar who were not a part of this performance.
The images you see in this post are only showing Imogen through the last two songs of the gig. Honestly, I forgot to pull my camera out of my car when I parked it as I rushed towards Hard Rock Cafe. I actually ran back to get the camera after 4-5 songs were over! Because some things are just worth doing.. or capturing!
Hope to attend all the Dewarists artists’ gigs at HRC.. and bring you my experience through Yuscious.

She’s an Animal.
Monica’s Shaa’ir+Func act mesmerized Delhi on the 23rd of September at Circa, Mehrauli.
Most of us know her through her rendition of Shaai in Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghaat.
What one gets to see in her gigs is a side that is enchanting, charming and arresting. She performs. She sings.. and communicates. And how. Choreography doesn’t exist when her movements become the lyrics and the emotion in the song + vice versa. While Randolph studiously generates the ‘Func’ through his guitar notes, Monica moves but doesn’t gyrate. Such is the intensity that you feel life in its explicit gets thrown at you.. and you do embrace it, love it, and dance with it. You may be confined to one point in the crazy crowd that Monica pulls to the stage, but you know you feel in you a connect with this Artist.. who is honest and true to you with what she wants to convey.
I have not seen anyone with enough energy to express so much through dance as well as vocals. The intensity in her movements makes you raise your eyebrows when you hear her hit her notes right! In the current era of auto-tune, it’s a Delight to hear anyone pull off a song in a live act. She surpasses that delight.
Looking at her attire, her make-up ..there’s suggestion of her free-spirited self.
Free. Like an Animal. A beautiful one at that.
